What the labels mean
- Sourced published by a cited source, used as published
- Our calculation math on sourced numbers (averages, midpoints, totals)
- Assumption our own choice where no source covers it
Tags show where each rate comes from. Every line total and every typical value is our calculation.
Assumptions for this estimate

These depend on your town and your yard, so we list them separately:
- Permit (if your town requires one): $20–$60 (Angi fence guide); $40–$150 (HomeGuide); $100–$500 (Angi wood fence guide)
- Land survey / property line marking: $200–$1,200 (HomeGuide)
- Land leveling or grading: $1,000–$3,200 (Angi)
- Professional painting or staining: $3.50–$13 per linear ft (Angi)
- Automatic gate opener / automatic driveway gate: $1,900–$6,000 installed for an automatic driveway gate (Angi)
- Utility locate (811): 811 is the national call-before-you-dig number. The contractor should request a locate before digging post holes (HomeGuide).
Price per linear foot we use (fence only)
Data last reviewed October 8, 2026. Typical is the midpoint of low and high (our assumption).
| Fence | Low | Typical | High | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood, 4 ft | $15 | $27.50 | $40 | Our calculation Average of Angi's wood fence range ($10–$30/ft, height not specified) and HomeGuide's picket fence range ($20–$50/ft, 3–5 ft). |
| Wood, 6 ft | $26 | $43 | $60 | Our calculation Average of Angi's wood privacy style ($27–$60/ft) and HomeGuide's 6-ft privacy fence ($25–$60/ft). |
| Vinyl, 4 ft | $17.50 | $31.25 | $45 | Our calculation Average of Angi's standard 4- or 6-ft vinyl ($15–$40/ft) and HomeGuide's picket fence ($20–$50/ft, 3–5 ft). |
| Vinyl, 6 ft | $25 | $37.50 | $50 | Our calculation Average of Angi's 6-ft vinyl ($25–$40/ft) and HomeGuide's 6-ft privacy fence ($25–$60/ft). |
| Chain-link, 4 ft | $8 | $14 | $20 | Sourced Angi chain-link by height: 4 ft $8–$20/ft. |
| Chain-link, 6 ft | $10 | $19.50 | $29 | Sourced Angi chain-link by height: 6 ft $10–$29/ft. |
| Aluminum, 4 ft | $22.50 | $36.25 | $50 | Our calculation Average of Angi's aluminum picket style ($25–$50/ft) and HomeGuide's picket fence ($20–$50/ft, 3–5 ft). |
| Aluminum, 6 ft | $28.12 | $45.31 | $62.50 | Assumption Our assumption: the 4-ft aluminum range × 1.25. None of our sources publishes a 6-ft aluminum range. |

Gates, removal and terrain
| Item | Low | Typical | High | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood walk gate | $200 | $400 | $600 | Sourced Angi: standard 4-ft-wide wood gate $200–$600. |
| Vinyl walk gate | $300 | $900 | $1,500 | Sourced Angi: vinyl gates $300–$1,500 purchased and installed. |
| Chain-link walk gate | $100 | $275 | $450 | Sourced Angi: standard residential chain-link swing gate $100–$450. |
| Aluminum walk gate | $300 | $600 | $900 | Assumption Our assumption for one manual walk gate. Angi says aluminum gates run from $100 (simple 3-ft swing gate) up to $6,000 (automatic driveway gate) but gives no walk-gate range, so $300–$900 is ours. |
| Double / drive gate (manual, any material) | $300 | $750 | $1,200 | Sourced Angi: manual driveway gates $300–$1,200 'depending on materials'. Used for every material. Angi doesn't say whether this includes installation labor or new posts, so treat it with caution. Automatic gates are not covered. |
| Old fence removal, per ft | $6.50 | $9.50 | $12.50 | Our calculation Average of Angi ($3–$5/ft) and HomeGuide ($10–$20/ft). The sources disagree a lot; Angi's wood guide also gives $3–$7/ft. |
| Terrain: flat, easy digging | × 1.00 on the fence line | No adjustment. | ||
| Terrain: moderate slope or rocky soil | × 1.15 on the fence line | Assumption Our assumption: +15% on the fence line. Sources agree slopes and rock add labor but none we trust publishes a percentage. | ||
| Terrain: steep, very rocky or hard to reach | × 1.30 on the fence line | Assumption Our assumption: +30% on the fence line. Very difficult sites can cost much more, and may also need grading ($1,000–$3,200 per Angi), which we don't add. | ||
