How the checker works

  • Price per linear foot = the quote's total ÷ the quote's length (your project length unless you change it on the quote). It includes everything in the quote. If you enter line items, we also show a fence-only price per foot: (total − line items) ÷ length.
  • Reference range Our calculation = the same calculation as the cost calculator, using each quote's own specs. If a quote marks removal or gates as not included, we leave those out of that quote's reference. It's a national range, not a local price.
  • Below / within / above only describes where a total sits against national ranges. Local labor, terrain, access, materials and project complexity all move real prices, so it isn't a verdict on the quote.
  • Not directly comparable: if quotes differ in material, height, length (more than 5%) or gates, or one includes an item another excludes, we say exactly what differs and don't rank them. Items answered for some quotes but not others are listed as unknown.
  • Compared with your other quotes: only when quotes are for the same job, we point out a total more than 25% above or below the middle (median) of your quotes.
  • Not stated items become questions to ask. Not included items may cost extra.
