Chain-link fence cost

Chain-link is usually the cheapest common fence to install. Height, wire gauge and coating are what separate a low quote from a high one.

What moves the price of chain-link

  • Height. The biggest driver in Angi's data: 4 ft runs $8–$20/ft and 6 ft $10–$29/ft.
  • Gauge. Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire. Angi says 9-gauge is most common for homes (Angi, updated September 30, 2026).
  • Coating. Galvanized is the base. Powder coating and colored vinyl coating add per-foot cost.
  • Privacy. Slats add $3–$10/ft.
  • Posts and framework. Terminal posts at corners, ends and gates cost more than line posts, so a fence with many corners costs more per foot.

What to ask a chain-link contractor

  1. What gauge is the mesh, and what's the post and top-rail size?
  2. Galvanized, or vinyl-coated? Is the framework coated too?
  3. Is there a top rail, a bottom tension wire, or both?
  4. How many terminal posts, and are all posts set in concrete?
  5. Gate width, and what latch? Will the gate be able to take a padlock?
  6. Is removing the old fence included?
