Fence replacement cost

Replacing a fence is two jobs in one quote: tearing out and hauling away the old fence, then installing the new one. Check that both are priced.

National reference ranges, not local prices. How we price

HomeGuide's replacement range ($30–$80/ft) is higher than its new-install range for the same wood and vinyl fences because removal is included.

How we estimate a replacement

Replacement = old fence removal + a new fence. We use our removal range ($6.50–$12.50/ft, a blend of Angi and HomeGuide that the sources disagree on) plus the new fence's per-foot range and gates.

Cross-check: the first example works out to $33.87–$76.53 per foot all-in. HomeGuide's replacement range for wood and vinyl is $30–$80/ft. The two overlap but aren't identical, a reminder that these are rough national figures.

Repair or replace?

Angi suggests replacement makes more sense for an older fence (15–20+ years), bad damage like broken sections or leaning, widespread rot or rust, or a fence that doesn't meet code. Repairs make more sense for a fence under about 10 years old with limited damage and a sound structure (Angi, updated August 3, 2026).

What to ask about a replacement quote

  1. Is removal included, including pulling old posts and concrete footings?
  2. Where does the old fence go, and is the disposal fee included?
  3. Will you reuse any existing posts? If so, how do you check they're sound?
  4. Will the new fence go exactly where the old one was? Who confirms the property line?
  5. Do I need a new permit for a replacement in my town?
  6. How long will my yard be without a fence (pets, pool)?
