National reference ranges, not local prices. How we price

Angi also notes that a fence taller than 6 feet “will likely cost 20% to 30% more than standard sizes” (Angi, updated August 3, 2026). Our calculator only covers 4 ft and 6 ft.

Our reference range for a 6-ft wood fence is $26–$60/ft (typical $43): the average of Angi's privacy-style range and HomeGuide's 6-ft privacy range. For 4 ft we use $15–$40/ft (typical $27.50). Why, and how this could be wrong.

The second example uses our terrain assumption (+15%) and a drive-gate range whose scope Angi doesn't fully define, so treat it as rougher than the first.

What moves the price of a wood fence

  • Type of wood. Angi calls the type of wood “the most significant factor in the cost” (Angi, updated August 3, 2026). Ask exactly which species and grade you're getting for pickets, rails and posts. They aren't always the same.
  • Style. Privacy designs use more boards than spaced pickets. Board-on-board and shadowbox styles use more again.
  • Length. Short fences can cost more per foot because setup and prep are similar regardless of length (Angi, updated August 3, 2026). Expect a higher per-foot price on a 40-ft run than a 200-ft one.
  • Posts. Post size, depth and concrete drive both cost and how long the fence stays straight.
  • Ground and access. Slopes, rock, roots and tight side yards add labor.
  • Finishing. Professional staining is extra: $3.50–$13/ft (Angi, updated August 3, 2026).

What to ask a wood fence contractor

  1. Which wood species and grade for pickets, rails and posts? Are posts pressure-treated for ground contact?
  2. What post size, how deep, and set in concrete? How far apart?
  3. Which side of the fence faces my yard?
  4. What fasteners will you use?
  5. Is staining or sealing included? If not, when should it be done?
  6. How wide are the gates, and how do you keep them from sagging?
  7. Who pulls the permit, and who confirms the property line?
  8. Is removal and haul-away of the old fence included?
  9. What's the workmanship warranty, in writing?
