Fence removal cost

Published removal prices don’t agree, and that’s worth knowing before you read a quote. Here’s what each source says and how we handle it.

What the labels mean

  • Sourced published by a cited source, used as published
  • Our calculation math on sourced numbers (averages, midpoints, totals)
  • Assumption our own choice where no source covers it

National reference ranges, not local prices. How we price

Angi's pages put removal at about $3–$5 per foot ($3–$7 in its wood guide, or $300–$750 for most jobs). HomeGuide puts it at $10–$20 per foot, “depending on the fence type and hauling distance.” That's a big gap, and we can't tell from the pages which better matches a given job.

How we estimate removal

Our calculation We average the two: low ($3 + $10) ÷ 2 = $6.50, high ($5 + $20) ÷ 2 = $12.50 per foot, typical $9.50 (the midpoint). Assumption Averaging two sources that disagree this much is our choice, not a published figure. Removal-only examples (our estimates, rounded to $10):

Fence lengthLowTypicalHigh
100 ft$650$950$1,250
150 ft$980$1,430$1,880
250 ft$1,630$2,380$3,130

National reference ranges, not local prices. How we price

Math: length × $6.50, $9.50 and $12.50 per foot.

Why removal prices vary

  • Concrete footings. Posts set in concrete take much longer to pull than posts set in dirt.
  • Material. Chain-link and wood come apart differently, and disposal rules can differ.
  • Hauling and disposal. HomeGuide names hauling distance as a factor. Dump fees vary by area.
  • Bundling. Removal priced as part of a new install may cost less than a removal-only job.
  • DIY. Angi suggests removal is one task homeowners can do themselves, and puts junk removal for a DIY tear-out at about $240 on average (Angi, updated September 23, 2026).

What to ask before tear-out

  1. Does the price include pulling posts and their concrete footings?
  2. Are hauling and dump fees included?
  3. Will you fill post holes and leave the area level?
  4. If a neighbor shares the fence, who agrees to the removal?
  5. Can removal and new installation be done back to back?
